Bajos del Toro is one of the quieter corners of Costa Rica’s highlands — a cloud forest valley with fewer visitors than Arenal or Monteverde — and El Silencio Lodge & Spa, a Relais & Châteaux property, is built to match that pace. Its casitas are spread through the forest, each with its own fireplace and hot tub, and the restaurant runs largely on produce from the lodge’s own organic garden.
The spa uses treatments built around local plants and the cool mountain climate, and several trails on the property lead to waterfalls, including one reachable in under twenty minutes on foot. The valley’s elevation means cooler temperatures than the coast year-round, which makes hiking and outdoor time genuinely comfortable rather than something to plan around the heat.
We’d suggest two to three nights here, usually paired with a longer coastal stay — it’s a strong contrast stop on an itinerary rather than a full trip on its own.
