Locations

Osa Peninsula

For families interested in wildlife, the Osa Peninsula is a must-visit destination. Here, you’ll find the Corcovado National Park, one of the most biologically diverse places on earth. You can see monkeys, sloths, and exotic birds in their natural habitats, making it a great educational experience for kids.

Tortuguero National Park

Going through the canals of the Tortuguero National Park in boats is also a very special experience.  In Tortuguero the hotels are small, located in the middle of the jungle. And there is nothing compared to waking up at five in the morning to the screams of howler monkeys!  If you travel between July and October, one of the nights brings the highlight of your stay: watching the turtles spawn on the beach.

Arenal

Another great destination for families is Arenal, home to the Arenal Volcano. The area is a popular destination for adventure activities, such as ziplining, hiking, and hot springs. The thermal hot springs are a particular favorite among families, as they offer a fun and relaxing way to soak in the warm waters while surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Since Arenal Volcano also offers the possibility of doing the famous Costa Rican zip lines, many skip the stop in the Monteverde rainforest: But what this corner of jungle and constant humidity in Costa Rica brings is hard to find elsewhere. This biological reserve is located in the Tilarán mountain range and offers two of the highlights of a trip to Costa Rica: canopy (or zip lines) and hanging bridges. The first provides full adrenaline and is suitable for children from 4 years old. Safety is absolute in the sixteen jumps, ranging from one hundred meters to one kilometer, and it is not necessary to manipulate the hooks. The little ones are accompanied by a guide, who pulls with them in the longest ones and watches over them in some short ones where they can pull alone if they want.

When it comes to accommodations, Costa Rica has plenty of options to suit families of all sizes and budgets. Many hotels and resorts offer family-friendly amenities, such as kids’ clubs, swimming pools, and organized activities. Alternatively, families can choose to rent a villa or apartment, which often provides more space and flexibility for larger groups.

Some hotel recommendations: Manatus hotel in Tortuguero; at Arenal Volcano Hotel Tabacon Gran Spa Thermal Resort.

While in Costa Rica, make sure to try the local cuisine, which features a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood. Some must-try dishes include gallo pinto (rice and beans), ceviche, and plantains. Don’t forget to sample the local coffee, which is known for its high quality and unique flavor.

Between Arenal Volcano and Monteverde is El Trapiche (eltrapichetour.com). It is a farm owned by a Costa Rican family that organizes two-hour tours to see up close the process of making sugar, coffee, and cocoa, three of the country’s star products. Highly recommended and educational for families, children can take a ride in a typical colorful cart pulled by oxen.

Costa Rica offers families an unforgettable vacation experience. With its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and diverse wildlife, it’s an excellent destination for outdoor adventures and educational experiences. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences, there’s something for everyone in Costa Rica. So pack your bags, bring the family, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!
