Guanacaste’s Rio Perdido area is a different kind of luxury than the beach resorts — this is a working volcanic river canyon about 40 minutes inland from Liberia, and Rio Perdido Lodge & Thermal River is built into that landscape rather than beside a beach. The property’s suites overlook the canyon, and its centerpiece is the actual Rio Perdido, a naturally heated thermal river you swim in directly, along with a separate mineral hot springs area.
The setting lends itself to a more active few days than a standard beach stay: canyoneering and zip-lining through the gorge, guided hikes to the hot springs, and mountain biking on trails across the property. It pairs naturally with a stop on the Guanacaste coast — travelers often split a week here between a couple of nights at Rio Perdido and the rest on the beach at Tamarindo or Playa Flamingo.
Two to three nights is enough to make use of what’s here before continuing on to the coast.
